FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO — Caltrans is alerting motorists that southbound Interstate 5 will be temporarily closed at the Interstate 80 junction around 8 p.m. today to allow crews to upright a tanker truck that overturned at the Richards Boulevard exit near downtown Sacramento earlier today.

There is no estimated time how long southbound I-5 will be closed. During the shutdown, Caltrans will close the following freeway on-ramps and connectors to SB I-5:

  • Westbound Interstate 80 connector
  • Eastbound I-80 connector
  • El Camino on-ramp
  • The Richards Boulevard and Garden Highway on-ramps
  • The Richards Boulevard off-ramp

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time through the area and to use alternate routes.

Meanwhile, Caltrans has closed the southbound #4 lane near Richards Boulevard as well as the Garden Highway on-ramp to SB I-5, and Richards Boulevard off- and on-ramps to SB I-5. Motorists can expect traffic congestion to continue into the afternoon commute.

The department will issue traffic updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
