Potato Cut and Potato Truck Projects on State Route 299 in Shasta County
The Project:
The Potato Cut and Potato Truck projects are in Shasta County on State Route (SR) 299 just west of Woodhill Drive to one mile west of Big Bend Road.
Project Benefits:
The purpose of the Potato Cut project is to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions by updating geometric standards, including sight distance, shoulder width, and superelevation rates and transitions. The Potato Truck project will extend the truck climbing lane by tying together the two existing truck passing lanes, enhancing its effectiveness.
Project Includes:
Safety improvements include shoulder widening, a 12-foot soft median, superelevation correction, and additional guardrail. Some culvert systems will be rehabilitated, extended, or replaced and storm water treatment will be installed to treat runoff. Signage, delineators, pavement markers, and pavement markings will be upgraded to meet current standards. The two short, existing truck climbing lanes will be extended and combined, increasing the total passing length opportunity.
Current Project Schedule:
It is estimated these projects will take 100 workings days, with all days requiring traffic control. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2027.
Project Funding Estimates:
Project Cost: $6M for Potato Cut/$1M for Potato Truck
