April 21-25, 2025, is Work Zone Awareness Week, an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones.
In an effort to emphasize the importance of safe driving through work zones, Caltrans District 2 has launched a new campaign featuring some of our maintenance workers. The campaign's goal is to remind drivers that the men and women you see working on the roads are not just employees, they are parents, siblings, friends, and members of the community.
The campaign captures maintenance workers holding signs with powerful, heartfelt messages that highlight the real-life impacts of unsafe driving and distractions. Phrases like "I have a family waiting for me. Please slow down" and "One careless move can cost a life. Don't let it be mine" serve as sobering reminders of the human lives at stake. By putting faces to the cause, we hope to create a more personal and emotional connection with drivers, urging them to slow down, stay alert, and make safer choices behind the wheel.
District 2 maintenance workers face risks every day to keep our roads safe and functional. By sharing their voices and stories through this campaign, we aim to change the way drivers think about work zones, not as inconveniences, but as workplaces where lives are on the line. Small actions like reducing speed, eliminating distractions, and following posted signs can make a life-saving difference.
