Bridge Maintenance in SIS -- Before

REDDING Caltrans announced it will begin needed bridge maintenance repairs ranging from polyester concrete overlays to joint seal and abutment work to ensure commuters’ travel and truckers’ freight movement on multiple bridges along Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County on June 10th. The $3.29 million project is entirely funded by Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The project is currently scheduled to be completed by mid-December.

"Interstate 5 is the backbone of Northern California's travel and freight network,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “Thanks to the accelerated support of SB 1, Caltrans is working to ensure the longevity of these vital bridges.”

For most locations, motorists will encounter lane/shoulder closures with minimal delays, outside of peak traffic periods and vehicle incidents. Most of the project operations will be conducted during nighttime hours. When work occurs at the North Mount Shasta Separation location, motorists should plan for 24-hour ramp closures at times for the southbound North Mount Shasta Blvd exit (Exit 740). The Abrams Lake Overcrossing location will require one-way traffic control on Abrams Lake Road with minimal delays.

The project will rehabilitate these bridges:

  • Oak Street Undercrossing near Dunsmuir
  • North Mount Shasta Separation near Mount Shasta
  • Abrams Lake Overcrossing between Mount Shasta and Weed
  • Deetz Road Undercrossing between Mount Shasta and Weed
  • South Weed Undercrossing in Weed
  • Route 5/97 Separation in Weed
  • Route 5/265 Separation in North Weed
  • Klamath River Bridge & Separation north of Yreka near Collier Safety Roadside Rest Area

Drivers are reminded that the law requires them to slow down, obey temporary speed limit reductions, and drive carefully in and around construction areas. Motorists also should allot extra time for delays. Dees Burke Engineering Constructors, LLC is the lead contractor on the project.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually shared equally between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly thanks to the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1.
