Calexico Traffic Management Plan

Project Description

The construction of the expanded Calexico West (Downtown) Port of Entry by the General Services Administration (GSA) will be complete in Summer 2018. All southbound traffic began using this new facility on July 10, with northbound traffic beginning on September 11, 2018.  Traffic has shifted to 2nd Street and SR111 (Imperial Avenue) for both directions of travel to the POE.

Construction on Cesar Chavez Blvd. began in late August 2018, and is expected to be complete at the end of March 2019.  Once this roadway is widened and expanded to five lanes, all border related traffic will use SR111, SR98 and Cesar Chavez Blvd. to access the expanded Calexico West POE.  Access to the downtown Calexico business district, as well as the Gran Plaza Mall will also be improved with signing, striping and signalization.

Several collaborating agencies are working to ensure a smooth transition in traffic to the expanded Port, these include the City of Calexico, the Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Ultimately, the changes in traffic circulation are expected to expand route options that better manage traffic and congestion.
