San Ysidro International Gateway Monument

Experience the transformation of the San Ysidro International Gateway Project, where a new vision for the area near Interstate 5, Interstate 805, and the U.S./Mexico Border took shape. The iconic “Bienvenidos a California” (Welcome to California) monument, was replaced with a contemporary representation complemented by energy-efficient accent lighting, captivating artistic elements, and a vibrant array of drought-tolerant plants. Amidst this landscape, sustainable inert materials such as boulders and decorative gravel harmonize with the environment, creating an immersive and visually stunning experience.

At the heart of this transformation is a warm welcome to the State of California and the border community. Beyond aesthetics, the gateway monument and surrounding beautification efforts embody a commitment to climate resiliency, ignite economic opportunities, and uphold the unique identity and pride of the San Diego-Tijuana binational region. Witness the convergence of art and purpose as this project enriches the community and the state.

Casa Familiar is honored to cohost the unveiling of the new "Welcome to California" sign at the San Ysidro border crossing. This new sign is a testament to the power of community collaboration. 'We are thrilled to see the community’s input come to life in the final design. It reflects belonging and inclusivity towards our local, regional and indigenous communities"
Monica Hernandez, Development Officer of Casa Familiar
