SAN DIEGO — The Caltrans SR-78 Asset Management Project team will close all lanes of westbound State Route 78 (SR-78) at South Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos Monday, October 12 through Thursday, October 15 from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. to replace weigh-in-motion concrete slabs.

Motorists will be detoured at the South Rancho Santa Fe Road off-ramp and may re-enter westbound SR-78 at the South Rancho Santa Fe Road onramp.
This project will enhance a 17.7-mile stretch of SR-78, from Interstate 5 (I-5) in Oceanside to Broadway and Lincoln Parkway in Escondido. This important effort is focused on preserving existing infrastructure, improving safety, and modernizing the corridor to meet current and future transportation needs.
The SR-78 Asset Management project is estimated to cost $126 million and is funded solely by the State Highway Operation Protection Program, with $111.5 million in Federal funds ($9.2 million IIJA) and $14.5 million in State Funds.
Portable changeable message signs will be placed along the routes to advise of the closure and suggest alternate routes. Businesses and residents near the closure should anticipate construction noise and lighting during the closure.
This work will be performed at night under the protection of temporary freeway lane closures for enhanced crewmember protection and the safety of the traveling public. Nearby residents and businesses can expect increased traffic on the detour route, construction noise, and lights during this activity, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)- required vehicle backup alarms. Crews will work to minimize noise and impacts to all nearby communities.
Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.
The work schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other work-related reasons.
