SAN DIEGO —   The Caltrans I-5 Asset Management Project team will close three of four lanes on southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) at Gilman Drive on Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. to conduct bridge work.

All lanes will be open during the day. Caltrans has worked closely with the contractor to minimize traffic impacts by leaving one lane open and closing lanes only in the evenings for this work.

Southbound I-5 motorists are advised to take Interstate 805 (I-805) to connect to all points south. Motorists who continue on I-5 past I-805 will experience delays as traffic is guided into one lane to allow room for the bridge work.

The on-and-off ramps at Gilman Drive will also be closed.

Portable changeable message signs have been placed along the routes to advise of the closure and suggest alternative routes.

Residents near Gilman Drive and La Jolla Colony Drive should anticipate construction noise and lighting during the closure.

TRANSIT

All southbound Metropolitan Transit Service bus routes from La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will be running as usual. Bus route 30 travels from La Jolla to Old Town on the west side of I-5, while route 105 travels from UTC to Old Town on the east side of I-5. Blue Line Trolley service will remain available as an alternative to travel to all points south. Parking is available at the Nobel Drive and UTC stations.

The I-5 Asset Management Project will ensure that the southernmost segment of I-5 remains in a state of good repair while improving ride quality and reducing maintenance needs in the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City from Camino De La Plaza to 0.3 miles south of Via De La Valle. This important effort is focused on preserving existing infrastructure, improving safety, and modernizing the corridor to meet current and future transportation needs.

The project will rehabilitate pavement along the main roadway, shoulders, and freeway ramps to extend the service life of the existing pavement. Beyond resurfacing, the project incorporates a broad range of upgrades to improve performance, safety, and environmental conservation.

The total project cost is $113,745,800 and is funded by the State Highway Operation Protection Program, with $102,618,300 in Federal funds and $11,127,500 in SB1 State Funds. This project is part of $1.6 billion in work in San Diego County and a segment of the $623 million investment to improve safety and infrastructure on I-5, I-805, and SR-78.

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The work schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other work-related reasons.
