SR-78 in Palo Verde Closed Tonight with Limited Access Through March

SAN DIEGO — Caltrans maintenance crews will close State Route 78 (SR-78) from Howbuck Road/Lugo Road to Stallard Road tonight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to set up temporary construction barriers for a five-month bridge project spanning two bridges.

Motorists should avoid travel on SR-78 in this area during tonight’s closure by taking an eastern or western route:

East Route (crossing Arizona State line)

Southbound motorists can go east on Interstate 10 (I-10) to southbound State Route 95 (SR-95), connect to westbound Interstate 8 (I-8), and connect to northbound State Route 111 (SR-111) to SR-78.

Northbound motorists can go south on SR-111 to eastbound I-8, connect to northbound SR-95, and connect to eastbound I-10 to SR-78.

West Route

Southbound motorists can go west on I-10 to southbound State Route 86 (SR-86) to SR-78.

Northbound motorists can go west on SR-78 to northbound SR-86 and connect to eastbound I-10 to SR-78.

Beginning Friday at 5 a.m., SR-78 will remain open during bridge repair activities through March 2024, with one-way traffic control in effect. Delays are expected.

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The work schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other construction-related reasons.
