Snow Removal Operations To Begin Next Week
Ebbetts Pass (State Route 4)
Alpine County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will start seasonal snow removal operations on State Route 4 (Ebbetts Pass) beginning on Monday, March 23, 2026. Due to the warm weather and favorable road conditions Caltrans can start highway pass clearing operations this season weeks earlier than previous years.

State Route 4/Ebbetts Pass will remain closed to eastbound traffic at Lake Alpine and westbound traffic at the Raymond Meadows closure gate. While Caltrans cannot specify the exact date Ebbetts Pass will formally reopen to traffic, however, the district will be providing weekly pass clearing updates to the public including highway closure gate relocations and road conditions.
Each season Caltrans works tirelessly to re-open SR-4/Ebbetts Pass to the traveling public. Beginning next week our maintenance crews will be working 8-hour shifts, 5 days a week clearing out debris, down trees and making any repairs needed to roadway to safely re-open Ebbetts Pass out to motorists.
