Traffic Advisory Merced County 10/02/26

Rest Area, & Highway Lane Closures
Interstate 5 And State Routes 33, 99, & 165

Merced County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), and State Route 33 (SR-33), SR-99, and SR-165 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:

Interstate 5

  • Full highway connector ramp closure from southbound I-5 to eastbound SR-152 for pavement work on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Long-Term full closure of the southbound and northbound John C. Erreca Rest Areas on I-5 for sewer work beginning Thursday, April 1, 2026. No current ETO.
    • ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists traveling southbound are advised to use the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line).

State Route 33

  • Overnight one-way traffic control from McCabe Road to State Route 140 for pavement repair work beginning Sunday, October 4, through Friday, October 9, 2026, from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

State Route 99

  • One-way surface street traffic control on SR-99 at the East Atwater Overcrossing for utility work beginning Monday October 5, through Friday, October 9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

State Route 165

  • One-way traffic control from Mercy Springs Road Over-Crossing to the California Aqueduct Bridge for drainage work beginning Monday, October 5, through Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Henry Miller Avenue for utility work beginning Wednesday, October 7, through Thursday, October 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.
