Rest Area, Lane & Ramp Closures
Interstate 5 And State Route 59, & 140

Merced County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), and State Route 59 (SR-59), SR-99, and SR-140 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:

Interstate 5

  • Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through May 31, 2025.
    • ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists are advised to use the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line).

State Route 59

  • Long-term lane/shoulder closures northbound and southbound 16th Street Bridge for bridge work beginning Monday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 p.m.
  • Full long-term closure from W. Olive Ave/Santa Fe Drive to Cooper Avenue for railroad repair work beginning Wednesday, February 19, at 4:00 p.m. through Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. – Advanced highway closure notices and detour routes will be posted for motorists.

State Route 140

  • Long-term one-way traffic control at the Los Banos Creek for bridge work beginning Monday, August 5, at 6:00 a.m. through Monday, March 31, 2025, at 6:00 a.m.
  • One-way traffic control at the San Joaquin River for bridge work beginning Wednesday, February 19, through Thursday, February 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Tina Avenue for drainage work beginning Wednesday, February 19, through Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
