Caltrans To Close State Route 4 & State Route 89 For
44th Annual Death Ride Cycling Event In Alpine County
Alpine County – The 44th annual Tour of the California Alps – Death Ride Cycling Event will take place this week on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The 103-mile road cycling tour starts in Markleeville and includes more than 14,000 feet of climbing on Sierra Nevada roads, traversing both sides of State Route 89/Monitor Pass, State Route 4/Ebbett’s Pass, and the Pacific Grade. Nearly 90% of the course is closed to vehicles, and the ride is fully supported with aid stations, a lunch stop, SAG vehicles, and medical support.
Cyclists have from sunrise to sunset to complete the entire course. Due to the size and scope of the event, on July 12, 2025, Caltrans will close State 89 (SR-89) from Markleeville to the SR-4/SR-89 junction from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and SR-4/Ebbetts Pass from Markleeville to Lake Alpine from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Caltrans will have changeable message signs in place alerting motorists of the highway closures and ask the traveling public to avoid these highway corridors over the weekend and use alternate routes whenever possible.
