Caltrans To Make Traffic Safety Improvements On State Route 33 At Sperry Avenue In Stanislaus County

Published:

Stanislaus CountyThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will soon improve traffic safety on State Route 33 (SR-33) by converting a two-way stop to a 4-way stop at Sperry Road in the City of Patterson.

On Sunday, July 14, 2024, Caltrans will install stop signs on northbound and southbound SR-33 to help improve traffic safety and reduce the potential for broadside collisions at the intersection.  During the installation, the intersection and roads leading to the intersection will be closed from approximately 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The closures are as follows:

State Route 33 Safety Improvements Map

  • Full closure of State Route 33 between Las Palmas Avenue and Poppy Avenue
  • Southbound SR-33 closed between M Street and Las Palmas
  • Full closure of Sperry Avenue between Third Street and Orange Avenue
  • Sperry Avenue open to local traffic only between Ward Avenue and Third Street

Commercial vehicles are required to take the following detour:

  • From northbound SR-33: Right on Ward Avenue → Left on Sycamore Avenue → Left on Las Palmas → Right on SR-33
  • From Southbound SR-33: Right on M Street → Left on Ward Avenue → Left on Marshall Road → Right on SR-33

The new 4-way stop traffic control system will also feature solar-powered red flashing beacons on top of the stop signs for northbound and southbound traffic, “Stop Ahead” warning signs with yellow flashing beacons for northbound and southbound traffic, and fresh roadway markings and striping at all stops.

Temporary roadside message signs will be placed ahead of the intersection for approximately two weeks before the new stop signs are installed to alert motorists and help them adjust to the new controls. They will remain there for two weeks after installation. Signs will also be used on the day of the installation to indicate closures and detours.

Schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and materials, and other construction-related issues.
