Stanislaus County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will soon begin a pavement project on State Route 33, spanning from Crows Landing through Patterson.
This work will use a method known as Partial Depth Recycling (PDR), in which crews remove and recycle the top 3 to 6 inches of existing asphalt, blend it with stabilizing agents, and place the mixture back to form a stronger base before applying a new asphalt overlay. Because the underlying pavement structure is still in good condition, PDR offers an efficient, low waste solution that restores the roadway surface while conserving materials and reducing environmental impacts.
Construction is scheduled to begin Sunday, August 16, 2026, with completion expected by early November.
During nighttime work hours—from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.—motorists should expect one way traffic control in one mile sections of the highway. Caltrans advises drivers to allow extra time and be alert for crews working in the area. Exact locations will be available in weekly traffic advisories posted on dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-10/district-10-news.
Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.
