Caltrans To Begin Project To Upgrade The Transportation Management System In Stanislaus And San Joaquin Counties
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is set to begin a year-long project to modernize and enhance elements of the Transportation Management System across six highways in Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties.
These elements include:
- Cameras for live traffic monitoring and incident reporting through the Caltrans Transportation Management Center
- Roadside Weather Information Systems that collect and report local pavement and atmospheric data, which is used to alert the public to adverse weather conditions, chain controls, and road closures. They also assist maintenance teams by detecting existing concentrations of de-icing chemicals such as salt.
- Changeable Message Signs that display traffic information, emergency alerts, and Public Service Announcements to help motorists make informed decisions.
- Vehicle Detection Systems that collect and analyze real-time traffic data to detect traffic incidents and congestion and control ramp metering.
This project will also upgrade or construct new maintenance vehicle pullouts and upgrade guardrails to enhance safety for our maintenance crews and the traveling public.
Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 19, 2025, with completion expected in spring of 2026. It will require daytime and nighttime work, depending on the location. Daytime work will be performed Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and nighttime work will be performed Sunday through Friday from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.
During construction, motorists can expect shoulder and/or lane closures on primary highways, and shoulder closures and/or one-way traffic control on two-lane highways. Caltrans will provide specific lane closure information in weekly traffic advisories posted on District 10's social media and website.
Schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, equipment, and/or materials availability, and construction-related issues.
Pacific Infrastructure Construction, LLC of Vacaville, CA, will perform the work on this $10.7 million project.
