What is a Transportation Planner?

At Caltrans a Planner can be described as an interdisciplinary team member or manager who develops and analyzes policy and data to prepare, administer, and monitor transportation plans, programs, and projects. A Planner is employed to plan, develop, organize, and directed activities which integrate various social, economic, environmental, transportation, and land use factors to support implementation of a balanced, multi modal State transportation program.

What is a Transportation Engineer (Civil)?

The Transportation Engineer (Civil) is the entry, first working, and journey level of professional engineering work in Caltrans. A Transportation Engineer (Civil) performs engineering work involving plans, designs, details, and maintenance of transportation systems, in whole or in part, that may include land, rail, freeways, roads, airports, ramps, hydraulics, sanitary facilities, bridges, nonstandard major structures or transportation-related buildings, and other structures.

Analysts in Caltrans perform a wide variety of duties depending on the division and program responsibilities. Analytical work, in addition to the performance of staff work, involves substantial responsibility for: problem definition, developing a unique project plan, identifying alternative solutions, implementing the desired course of action, and monitoring results.

What is a Research Data Analyst?

Research Data Analysts or Specialists are responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting studies in a variety of areas, which affect programs or systems development. The term research as applied to this classification series is defined as a systematic, critical, quantitative, and qualitative analytical approach to data collection and querying, mining and manipulation, data quality determination, and intensive investigation directed toward either a more comprehensive knowledge of the subject or for use in the resolution and operational improvement of program-related issues.

Research Data Analysts or Specialists will perform data-driving research and statistical analysis; monitor data reporting tools; conduct simulation models; create procedures to assemble and structure data; present findings in a user-friendly format using various data presenting platforms; and provide consultative services on the feasibility, impact, and potential impact on the variety of state operations, projects, or proposals to interested parties.

What is a Senior Transportation Planner?

A Senior Transportation Planner for Caltrans, under general direction, (1) directs the work of a headquarters branch; or (2) has charge of a district branch or unit including project level activities and regional level analysis; or (3) acts as a technical expert performing the most difficult and complex work which is either critical to the Department's basic mission or of statewide significance.

What is a Senior Transportation Engineer?

A Senior Transportation Engineer for Caltrans, under general direction, (1) is a first line supervisor to have charge of varied and difficult transportation engineering work in the field or office involving the supervision of engineers and others engaged in transportation development activities; or (2) in a specialist capacity, to perform other difficult and complex engineering work relating to specialized transportation projects, research studies, planning and operations of transportation systems; or (3) provide technical oversight of consultants or local agency staff performing engineering work related to the development of State transportation projects; and to do other related work.
