Sacramento — It's the happiest time of the year! In this News Flash, Caltrans interviews those who helped the U.S. Forest Service transport the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree throughout California and across the country to Washington DC.

The U.S. Forest Service picked this year's tree, "Sugar Bear", from the Six Rivers National Forest located in the far northwestern corner of California. Caltrans permitted the tree's route as it moved throughout the state.
The tradition of the Capitol Christmas Tree, or "The People's Tree," began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. Since the 1970s, the U.S. Forest Service selects a tree from a different national forest each year for display at the U.S. Capitol.
