EUREKA — In this Caltrans News Flash, see how Caltrans enhances fish passage with innovative construction projects to ensure the interconnectivity of fish, reptiles, and other animals along our waterways.
Fish passage is unique for each site, but imperative for Caltrans to consider when working on new construction along our waterways. Removing barriers can reconnect aquatic species and improve movement to their natural habitats.
Caltrans installed a precast bottomless arch culvert to replace two preexisting culverts under U.S. Highway 101 at Ritmer Creek, just north of Crescent City in Del Norte County. The innovative solution was faster to install and provided a natural substrate, or bottom, which improved fish passage.
