MARIN COUNTY — Caltrans has completed the US-101 Harbor Bridge construction project in San Rafael. Final lane striping was placed on the morning of Thursday, April 27, 2023, and the final construction item concluded on Monday, May 8, 2023.

The original bridge was constructed in 1941 and was widened in 1953. The need for the project was to add structure and seismic reinforcements.

This $23 million project replaced the structurally deficient US-101 Northbound Central San Rafael off-ramp bridge with a new bridge with minor realignment but with widened shoulders. This project also provided improvements at the 2nd Street and Irwin Street intersection.

Work included adding a second right turn lane in the off-ramp turning onto 2nd Street to reduce backup onto the highway.

The project also improved pedestrian safety by relocating 2nd Street crosswalks at the intersection of Irwin and 2nd. Furthermore, it added a second righthand turn lane to allow for more motorists to turn onto 2nd Street.

The construction project started in February 2021, and on Dec. 11, 2021, was suspended due to environmental regulations for in-creek work.

Work on the intersection improvements started in May 2022 while in-creek work resumed in June 2022 to complete the western portion of the new bridge and switch to the final traffic configuration. The deck of the western portion of the new bridge and the bridge approach slab were then completed.

Caltrans wants to thank Marin County residents, motorists, businesses and local agencies for being patient while we completed this project.
