Bridge Rail Improvements in Alameda County March 2023 Through Mid-2024

Published:

Alameda County ― Caltrans has scheduled to begin replacing and upgrading the existing bridge railings on four bridges in Alameda County to meet current Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware criteria, to protect the traveling public and to enhance safety of the bridges, starting in March 2023 and running through mid-2024. The project locations are summarized below:

  • Location 1 – San Leandro Street Overcrossing (Bridge No. 33-0284), City of Oakland
  • Location 2 – Tennyson Road Overcrossing (Bridge No. 33-0236), City of Hayward
  • Location 3 – Washington Ave Overcrossing (Bridge No. 33-0166), City of San Leandro
  • Location 4 – Damon Slough Southbound On-Ramp (Bridge No. 33-0142K), City of Oakland

The work will also involve upgrading portions of sidewalks, curb ramps, and metal beam guardrail, and refinishing of the bridge deck. It is anticipated that the work will begin on the first two locations – the San Leandro Street overcrossing and Washington Avenue overcrossing - in March 2023, followed by the next two locations of the Damon Slough southbound onramp and the Tennyson Road overcrossing.

The work on each bridge will be performed in a several stages and each stage will be performed at one side of bridge at a time to minimize the traffic impacts. The work will take place either daytime or nighttime, but at least one lane in each direction will always be open during construction.

Temporary pedestrian access routes with signage will be provided at all the time to guide pedestrians when sidewalks and curb ramps are closed for construction.

Every effort will be made to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, but residents and businesses should expect some construction noise.

Caltrans thanks the traveling public for your patience while we work to improve our state’s highways and bridges.
