Caltrans and Pacifica Announce Completion of Highway 1 Overcrossing and 10 Miles of Pavement Rehabilitation
Pacifica - Caltrans and the City of Pacifica announced the completion of two projects: the replacement of the San Jose Avenue pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing spanning Highway 1, connecting communities and providing access for children to get to school, in addition to a major pavement rehabilitation on 10 miles of Highway 1.
“This overpass is a symbol of the future of California’s transportation network, connecting communities, improving safety and providing new mobility options for thousands of residents,” said Caltrans Bay Area Director Tony Tavares. “The new San Jose Avenue overcrossing replaced a decades-old, weatherworn overcrossing with a new structure that will serve future generations of Californians.”
“Like many residents of Pacifica, I’m thrilled with this addition to our infrastructure,” said Pacifica Mayor Sue Vaterlaus. “I can tell you it’s a joy to ride on the new pavement. The old overcrossing served us for years, but it was rusted and blighted. The new overcrossing is, by comparison, beautiful, strong, and will serve the needs of our citizens for years, including those with disabilities, as an important pedestrian connection between East and West Sharp Park.”
The contractor on the paving project, Granite Rock of Redwood City, was awarded an $18 million contract and began work in April 2018, grinding and paving a ten-mile section of Highway 1, extending from Gray Whale Cove near the southern portal of the Devils Slide Tunnel to I-280 in Daly City.
Bridgeway Civil Constructors, Inc. was awarded an $8.4 million contract and began work in July 2018 to replace the old San Jose Avenue pedestrian overcrossing. The old San Jose Avenue overcrossing was built in1968.
