Caltrans to Demolish Elevated Freeway Lanes
On Southbound U.S. Hwy 101 in Petaluma
Daytime work on weekdays, Monday, October 9 – Friday, October 29
Night work on weekend, October 16 – October 18, 33 hours continuous work
Southbound traffic shifted to temporary lanes days before demolition
PETALUMA - As part of the Petaluma Widening Project, Caltrans will demolish the southbound lanes of the North Petaluma Overhead, a section of elevated freeway on U.S. Highway 101 that passes over the SMART train tracks between E. Washington Street and Corona Road.
The demolition is scheduled from Monday, October 9 until Friday, October 29, 2021. During weekdays, Caltrans will work from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM.
Caltrans will also work a single weekend, starting Saturday, October 16, 8:30 PM until Monday, October 18, 5:30 AM. The 33 hours of continuous work will allow Caltrans to demolish the section of elevated freeway over the railroad tracks as no trains are scheduled to pass below during the weekend.
In early October, Caltrans will shift southbound Highway 101 traffic onto temporary lanes into the median of the freeway in preparation for the demolition.

- Saturday–Monday October 16-18
Work for 33 continuous hours, Saturday, October 16, 8:30 PM until Monday, October 18, 5:30 AM.
The Petaluma Widening project will add an additional lane, a carpool lane, to the existing two-lanes of northbound and southbound Highway 101. By demolishing the two-lane southbound bridge, Caltrans can build a new three-lane freeway bridge consisting of two mixed-use lanes and a carpool lane.
The Petaluma Widening Project is one of 13 projects of the larger Marin/Sonoma Narrows widening project to add a carpool lane in each direction of Highway 101 between State Route 37 in Marin and Corona Road in northern Petaluma.
