Traffic Switch Scheduled for U.S. Highway 50 Project in Sacramento
Remaining in Place Through December - Delays Expected
Sacramento – Caltrans has scheduled a traffic lane switch for eastbound U.S. Highway 50 that will last through December. The new configuration begins Friday night, March 24 for ongoing work on the U.S. Highway 50 Corridor Enhancement (“Fix50”) Project.
The contractor requires additional room to construct high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes for Highway 50 (near the Interstate 5 (I-5) interchange. Additional signs will direct motorists merging onto Highway 50.
LANE SHIFT: Eastbound Highway 50
Beginning Saturday 3/25 (weather permitting)
- Motorists heading eastbound Hihgwa50 to exit 15th Street, southbound State Route 99 or the Capital City Freeway/Business 80 (State Route 51) must stay in lane #3 (far right) at the traffic split.
- Motorists heading on eastbound Highway 50/South Lake Tahoe must stay in the #1 and 2 (far left) lanes at the traffic split to drive through the median bypass lanes.
The ongoing work is part of the $460 million project to rehabilitate pavement on Highway 50 from the Highway 50/Interstate 5 interchange to the Highway 50/Watt Avenue interchange for a total of 14 new HOV lane miles and 54 lane miles of pavement rehabilitation. The project also includes new sound walls, drainage improvements, lighting and Intelligent Transportation System elements.
The project is funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program’s Roadway Rehabilitation Program, Solutions for Congested Corridors Program (SCCP), Senate Bill (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, and the City of Sacramento’s Measure A Transportation Sales Tax Program managed by the Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA).
Motorists traveling through the work zone should expect lane restrictions and should be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement. Crews are scheduled to work in the construction zone day and night, and the speed limit has been reduced for the safety of workers and motorists. The speed limit will be enforced 24/7. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” – someone’s loved one is at work.
