FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sacramento — Caltrans is informing South Sacramento residents that pedestrian overcrossing closures along State Route 99 (SR-99) between Broadway and Florin Road will be extended due to construction delays from a recent strike by Northern California Painters and Finishing Contractors.

Pedestrian overcrossings at 8th Avenue, 27th Avenue, 43rd/44th Avenues, and Turn bridge Drive/Maynard Way will be closed while work continues to replace fencing and lighting.

The overcrossing at 27th Avenue is expected to reopen on August 18, followed by the overcrossing between Maynard Way and Turn bridge Drive on August 31.

The overcrossings at 8th Avenue and 43rd/44th Avenues will remain closed through August 29 but reopen for daytime access on August 30 between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. The 8th Avenue overcrossing is scheduled to fully reopen on September 15, and the overcrossing between 43rd and 44th Avenues is scheduled to fully reopen on September 25.

The schedules are subject to change due to weather, availability of equipment and/or materials or other construction-related issues.

A free, on-demand shuttle service will continue to be available each day during the full closures from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to provide transportation from the pedestrian overcrossings. Area residents can contact Universal Limousine and Transportation at (916) 361-5466 to be transported from one side of the pedestrian crossing to the other. Vehicles will be accessible as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Work on the Clean California State Route 99 South Sacramento Project began in October 2022. During the first phase of the $13.3 million project, sound walls and retaining walls in seven locations are being painted, slope paving with decorative details are being installed at 10 bridges, and mulch and inert materials are being placed at various locations to beautify the corridor.

The second phase includes safety improvements for the four pedestrian overcrossings and the installation of public art to include decorative steel art panels mounted along the sound walls of the highway and two murals created by local artists at the 2nd Avenue and 21st Avenue under crossings.

The lead contractor for the second phase is American Civil Constructors of Benicia. The project is expected to be finished in June 2024.

Part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s California Comeback Plan, Clean California is a sweeping $1.1 billion, multiyear cleanup effort to remove trash, create thousands of jobs and engage communities to transform roadsides and restore pride in public spaces.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for 4,385 highway lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties.
