SAN DIEGO — Caltrans construction crews will close up to three lanes of westbound Interstate 8 (I-8) at Main Street in El Cajon Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for narrowing of lanes and restriping as part of an ongoing construction project. There will be no full freeway closures or daytime work.

The construction closure includes the westbound on-ramp at Main Street in El Cajon and El Cajon Blvd.

The work is part of a three-mile project that involves bridge rehabilitation and concrete slab repairs on both westbound and eastbound I-8, with scheduled completion in summer 2023, weather permitting.

Residents in the area may hear construction trucks and beeping from construction vehicles. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration established standards for using backup alarms on construction vehicles and material handling equipment because of the widespread danger posed to people on the site.

Additional information on this project can be found at https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/current-projects/i8pavandbridgerehab

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other construction-related reasons.
