Closures Planned on I-8 in Mission Valley Tuesday

I-5, SR-163 Connectors to be Impacted

SAN DIEGO — Caltrans crews are planning nighttime closures on Interstate 8 (I-8) connectors with State Route 163 (SR-163) and Interstate 5 (I-5) in Mission Valley Tuesday, October 18, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Construction crews are wrapping up a road rehabilitation project on two miles of I-8 to improve the lifespan of the roadway.

Closures and Detours:

  • Eastbound I-8 at I-5 interchange (from Ocean Beach):
    • Detour: Head east on I-8 towards southbound I-5, to northbound SR-163 to the eastbound I-8 connector.
  • Southbound I-5 to Eastbound I-8 Connector:
    • Detour: Head south on I-5 towards Old Town Avenue. Turn right on to Moore Street, then make a left toward the Northbound I-5 on ramp. From Northbound I-5, transition on to the Eastbound I-8 connector.
  • Westbound I-8 to Southbound SR-163 Connector:
    • Detour: From westbound I-8, exit on Qualcomm Way and turn right towards Friars Road. Turn left on Friars Road and head west towards southbound SR-163 on-ramp.
  • Southbound SR-163 to Eastbound I-8:
    • Detour: Head south on SR-163 towards westbound I-8. Continue on westbound I-8 towards Taylor Street off-ramp. Head west on Taylor Street, over the bridge and make a left on Hotel Circle South. Continue onto the eastbound I-8 on-ramp.

Nearby residents and businesses can expect nighttime construction noise and lights, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required vehicle back-up alarms. Crews will work to minimize noise and impacts.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other construction considerations.
