SAN DIEGO — Wildfire Fuel Reduction efforts on a five-mile section of State Route 78 (SR-78) from 4th Street in Ramona to Sutherland Dam Road will begin Monday, Aug. 29 to Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, according to Caltrans.

SR-78 will be reduced to one lane in one-mile increments Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., to allow crew members to remove dry brush and vegetation from the highway shoulders.

Crews expect to clear a one-mile segment each day beginning on eastbound SR-78 and then switching to the westbound side.

Highway workers with flags will be in place to direct motorists one direction at a time onto the single open lane. Pilot vehicles may also be used to escort traffic on the single open lane.

Motorists may experience delays depending on traffic queues and are advised to allow additional travel time to reach their destinations.

SR-78 Wildfire Fuel Reduction efforts spanning 30 miles from Ramona to San Felipe Road in Julian are planned for upcoming weeks. The work schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents or other project related reasons.

Caltrans thanks motorists and community members for their understanding as crews perform this critical wildfire fuel reduction.

Please be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and watch for highway workers and moving maintenance equipment.
