Caltrans to Re-Open Monitor Pass for Spring/Summer 2024

Published:

ALPINE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will formally reopen State Route 89 over Monitor Pass on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. for the spring/summer 2024 season barring any unforeseen weather circumstances.

Monitor Pass, at 8,314 feet of elevation, has been closed since early-January for the 2023-24 winter season. Caltrans crews began excavating on April 1, 2024, and finished clearing the road of all snow this week. Crews are currently in the process of clearing the pass of debris and making any needed repairs to the roadway.

At Caltrans our number one goal is safety for the traveling public. Even though the pass is open, motorists still should be prepared for emergencies as the weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Caltrans urges motorists to continue using caution while driving in winter conditions and watch for icy road conditions in the overnight and early morning hours.
