Caltrans to Begin Guardrail Improvement Project on State Route 99 Merced County

Project Will Remove and Replace Existing Guardrails, and Improve Traffic Safety

Stockton – The California Department Of Transportation (Caltrans) Is Preparing To Begin A Project That Will Improve Traffic Safety On State Route 99 (Sr-99) With The Installation Of New Guardrails Between The Sultana Drive Overpass And West Atwater Drive Overpass Near The City Of Atwater In Merced County. 

Work Will Include The Removal And Installation Of Guardrails To Upgrade The Existing Metal Beam Guardrails (Mbgr) To The Current Standard Midwest Guardrail System (Mgs). The Work Is Necessary To Help To Reduce The Severity Of Roadway Departure Collisions And To Comply With Current Safety Standards.

Overnight, Alternating Lane Closures On Southbound And Northbound Sr-99, As Well As Nighttime Ramp Closures At Westside Boulevard (South/Northbound On-Ramp & Off-Ramp) And Sultana Drive (South/Northbound On-Ramp & Off-Ramp). Surface Street Closures Will Be Required For The Safety Of Motorists, Roadway Workers, And Equipment Which Will Occur On Westside Boulevard (East Of Northbound On-Ramp & West Of Southbound Off-Ramp), Liberty Avenue (East Of Northbound On-Ramp), And Sultana Drive (West Of Southbound Off-Ramp).

Beginning Monday, July 17, 2023, Crews Will Work Mostly Night Shifts, With Some Daytime Work, For Approximately 55 Working Days - Sundays Through Thursdays - With Completion Expected In October 2023.  Overhead And Roadside Message Signs Will Be Placed On Sr-99 To Alert Motorists Of Scheduled Highway And Ramp Closures.  Ramp Detour Signs Will Also Be Posted On Surface Streets.

This $2.65 Million Project Was Awarded To Midstate Barrier, Inc. (Stockton, Ca), Who Will Perform The Work Required.

This Project Will Benefit Commuters Traveling To And From The Cities Of Modesto, Atwater, And Merced, As Well As Motorists, And Truckers Hauling Commercial And Agricultural Goods Throughout Merced County And Beyond.

Caltrans Will Provide Continuous Updates On Scheduled Lane And Ramp Closures, And Any Other Lane Closure Details In Future Traffic Advisories And Social Media Posts.
