Project Replaced Existing Crosswalk With Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon Crosswalk

STOCKTON – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to activate a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB)/High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) System at the intersection of State Route 165/Lander Ave and Campbell Street in front of Hilmar High School, in Merced County.

Caltrans will activate the new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB)/High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

The PHB/HAWK System project included work to excavate the roadway to install new striping and lighting, along with the removal and replacement of concrete curbs, sidewalks, and curb ramps, and finally the installation of the PHB/HAWK pedestrian crosswalk system.

"We are very pleased with this added safety feature in our community.  The HAWK system will improve student safety as they cross Lander Avenue and benefit our community visiting our campus for school activities.” – Isabel Cabral-Johnson, Superintendent, Hilmar Unified School District

This $478K project will benefit the students and pedestrians using the Lander Avenue and Campbell Street intersection for many years to come. The PHB/HAWK pedestrian crosswalk system will provide proper warning for motorists to slow down and stop at the crosswalk, enhancing pedestrian safety and greatly reducing collision severity at the intersection.

Caltrans will provide continuous updates on scheduled lane and ramp closures, and any other lane closure details in future traffic advisories and social media posts.
