Caltrans and the City of Merced to Host Public Meeting for State Route 59 Widening Project in Merced County

Project Proposes to Widen and Improve State Route 59 near the City of Merced

STOCKTON – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the City of Merced will be holding a public meeting on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, to gather input from the public on a proposed highway widening project for State Route 59. The meeting will be held at the City of Merced Civic Center, Council Chambers located at 678 West 18th Street, on the Second Floor from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The purpose of the public meeting is to gather input from Merced County residents on the proposed widening project which plans to expand State Route 59 from a two-lane roadway to four lanes from 16th Street to Buena Vista Drive. The project is needed to relieve traffic congestion and improve traffic safety. The project also proposes to replace the Black Rascal Creek Bridge, South Fork Rascal Creek Bridge, and will include standard shoulders, intersection improvements, bicycle lanes, and sidewalks.

The State Route 59 Widening Project is scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2026 and Caltrans will be accepting public comments through October 26, 2023.
