Eureka High School graduate Isaac Young is this year’s recipient of the Caltrans District 1 Social Fund Scholarship.

Young will receive $2,250 to pursue his educational goals at the University of California, Irvine School of Social Ecology this fall and plans to study Urban Planning with an emphasis on sustainable and public transportation. Young was selected based on his academic record, participation in extra-curricular activities and interest in transportation.

Young said his focus is on mass transit and increasing safety by getting more cars off the road, especially in and near his hometown. “I’ve always been interested in trains and public transportation,” he said, “and I would love to see a more efficient and popular public transportation system in Eureka and the Humboldt Bay Area.” He added that his teachers have prepared him for the next part of his educational journey and that he is excited to utilize their tips in college and beyond.

The District 1 scholarship supports the professional growth of a high school senior or college, university, vocational or technical school student who is seeking a career in transportation. Applicants must also be from or reside in Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake or Mendocino counties.

Funding is provided by the District 1 Social Fund and the California Transportation Foundation (CTF). To learn more about CTF, please visit www.the-ctf.org.
