STOCKTON – In this Caltrans News Flash, you get a hands-on look at maintenance crews turning rocky roads into smooth surfaces as they repair a large depression on State Route 132, a critical commuter corridor from Stanislaus County to the Bay Area.

Maintenance crews first dig out the damaged area, removing two inches of asphalt and creating a smooth roadbed. The paver evenly spreads 300-degree hot-mix asphalt into the gap, and workers use shovels and rakes to confirm it blends with the existing road.

You'll see steam billowing from the hot-mix asphalt, you'll hear the sounds of heavy machinery, and you'll be alongside workers as they quickly maneuver the hot material.

It's a blending of men and women with their hand tools, and heavy-duty operators with their massive machines, combining their skills to create a road that feels like new.

Motorists will see more roadway maintenance projects as revenue from SB 1, the new transportation bill, begins this fall and provides $54 billion over the next ten years with additional funds beyond that.
