2018 James E. Roberts Engineering Scholarship Recipient

Branko Otashevich

A graduate from Bella Vista High School who is attending Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo for his major in Civil Engineering. He enjoys the idea of going into a major that has the possibility of giving back to the public. Branko also looks forward to being an active participant in the clubs there that would help his major as well as enlighten his college experience.

"My name is Richenny Bovannak, and I am extremely thankful to be a recipient of the James E. Roberts Engineering Scholarship. I recently graduated from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science, and am currently attending Cal Poly Pomona to pursue a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. As a woman in STEM, I believe that it is important to stay involved in the advancements and innovations of our society. Our roads, rail, and buildings are constantly undergoing development, and as a result, I am driven to become a Civil Engineer in order to help improve the quality of life, and positively influence the environment around us. I’d like to thank the Caltrans Transportation Foundation for supporting my education and allowing me the opportunity to pursue my goals. "

Christina Prosperi

Christina has been a student at National University since 2016 and will be finishing her BA in Public Administration in 2018. She is a wife and Mom to three young children who keep her very busy. Christina took the opportunity to become a Student of Administration with Caltrans District 2 in May of this year and is enjoying using her education to benefit all that goes into transportation. She looks forward to further serving Caltrans in the future.

"My name is Mario Jaramillo, and I’m currently in the honors program at Reedley College. My goal is to transfer to Fresno State to finish earning my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I am honored to receive the 2018 G. Langsner Memorial Scholarship which will help pay for my tuition."

"My name is Phuc-Khang Huynh. I am 18 years old, living in Sacramento, California. I graduated from Elk Grove High School in May 2018. Currently, I am attending Cosumnes River College, majoring in Civil Engineering. I plan to transfer to California State University of Sacramento in the next two years. I would like to thank Caltrans for choosing me as the recipient of the G. Langsner Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be a great assistance in supporting my goal to pursue my dream of becoming a civil engineer and the motivation for my education path. I will continue to study and work hard to be deserving of this scholarship."

Daniela Gomez

"My name is Daniela Gomez. I am currently working for Caltrans as a Student Assistant in Structures Construction while concurrently enrolled at San Diego State University and coaching gymnastics at the YMCA. As a student assistant I work on AutoCAD Civil 3D producing grades for the construction of falsework on the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project. I also create models of bridge components and retaining walls in 3D, review prestress shop drawings, and assist with Quality Assurance out in the field. I love the work that I have the privilege of doing; working for Caltrans has been a great learning experience."

"I am currently a senior at California State University of Sacramento. At the moment I am pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering and minoring in math. I am interested in focusing in the transportation and structural side since I have received a lot of experience form Caltrans. Aside from progressing towards my career, I find myself volunteering for the American Muslim Voice (AMV) as well as partaking in several clubs on campus. Thank you for awarding me with the honor of receiving the H. Heckeroth Scholarship."

This year I graduated from Dougherty Valley High School and will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall. I am excited to begin college and will continue working hard as I pursue my goal of becoming an environmental engineer."

"My name is Spencer Ortega and I am transferring to pursue my Bachelor degree in Computer Science. Similar to how public transportation has had such a positive impact on my life and more importantly the life of others. I am looking to take this same principle and positively affect the lives of others through the use of Computer Science. One of the main obstacles that stood in the way of my educational career was commuting to school, and public transportation most certainly contributed to my academic success. My personal experience with transportation and also my Father working at Caltrans definitely inspired me to pursue a career in the field because I know how much it means to my community. I am very thankful for The California Transportation Foundation and all public transportation for the endless amount of support I have received."

"As a young woman who is an electrician I enjoy working on traffic signals and street lighting. I been working with Caltrans for four years now. I have been married for three years. I'm not afraid to discuss new ideas to get the job done in a fast but safe manner. I am a goal-orientated person and I try to learn something new everyday at work. My next goal is to receive my degree so I can become an engineer for the Department of Transportation.

Thank you this opportunity and I look forward to working here for the rest of my career."

Stephanie Sanfilippo

Stephanie is a Communications major at Sacramento State and works part time as a student assistant at the California Department of Transportation. She has been working in the Director's Office for over a year on the California Road Charge Pilot Program. From her time at Caltrans, Stephanie has learned how essential our roads are for maintaining California's economy and quality of life. Stephanie hopes to pursue a full time career in transportation once she receives her degree and work towards making California a more safe, sustainable, integrated, and efficient transportation system.

"This fall I will be attending San Diego State University and will be majoring in Civil Engineering. Previously I attended Grossmont Community College. While in school I work as a student assistant for CalTrans District 11 and as a robotics instructor for the Rancho Santa Fe School District. When I am not studying or working I enjoy volunteering for Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church, Poway High School's F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition Team 1622 Spyder. While in high school I earned my Eagle Scout Rank with the Boy Scouts of America as a member of Troop 109 in Poway, CA. With this scholarship, I plan to further my education in hopes of someday working in the Advanced Planning Division."

"James (Alex) Switzgable is a California State University, Sacramento Civil Engineering student entering his final semester in his undergraduate program. Alex plans on continuing his education through Sacramento State's graduate program. His subject of emphasis will either be Structural or Water Resources. Alex has been working for Caltrans for a year and looks forward to his continued work while acquiring his M.S. in Civil Engineering. Serving the public has always been a passion of his, and Caltrans has been a perfect opportunity to feed that passion. "My name is Kathryn Baker and I'm honored to have received the James E. Roberts Engineering Scholarship. I grew up in Tuolumne County, and will be attending Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo to study Environmental Engineering. My interest in Environmental Engineering evolved from my passion for environmental advocacy, my attraction to STEM fields, and the encouragement I received from my dad, a transportation planner for CalTrans. My goal is to be able to use a career in Environmental Engineering as a powerful tool for positive change."
