In the year 2005, several California State Agencies contracted with the the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to produce aerial imagery for the entire State of California. Previously, this imagery only covered agricultural areas.

NAIP imagery products are available either as quarter quad tiles or as compressed county mosaics (CCM). The mosaics are generated by compressing digital quarter quadrangle image tiles scanned from natural color positive or color infrared positive aerial film into a single mosaic. The mosaic may cover all or portions of an individual final product. Each individual image tile within the mosaic covers a 3.75 x 3.75 minute quarter quadrangle plus a 300 meter buffer on all four sides. All individual tile images and the resulting mosaic were rectified to the UTM coordinate system, NAD 83 and cast into a single predetermined UTM zone. Weather conditions permitting, the goal was to produce imagery with no more than 10% cloud cover per quarter quad. The quarter quad imagery is made up of .tif files, and includes a statewide index file showing the boundaries of each image.

Each NAIP County directory contains the MrSID image as well as indexes (.shp) showing the boundaries of the quarter quad tiles within each CCM and a .prj file indicating the projection.</supplinf></descript><timeperd><current>publication date</current><timeinfo><mdattim><sngdate><caldate>20060901</caldate></sngdate><sngdate><caldate>2005</caldate></sngdate></mdattim></timeinfo></timeperd><spdom><bounding><westbc Sync="TRUE">-121.942961</westbc><eastbc Sync="TRUE">-120.980855</eastbc><northbc Sync="TRUE">38.820857</northbc><southbc Sync="TRUE">37.984991</southbc></bounding><lboundng><leftbc Sync="TRUE">592810.000000</leftbc><rightbc Sync="TRUE">675320.000000</rightbc><bottombc Sync="TRUE">4206030.000000</bottombc><topbc Sync="TRUE">4297440.000000</topbc></lboundng></spdom><natvform Sync="TRUE">Raster Dataset</natvform></idinfo>
