New Crosswalk Safety Feature to be Demonstrated in Sacramento

REDDING – Safety is Caltrans’ highest priority, including the safety of pedestrians. In this Caltrans News Flash, you’ll get a look at what could be the newest and innovative safety feature on pedestrian signal heads: The Yellow Pedestrian Border (YPB).

The YPB is a yellow border of LED lights that appear around the signal head when a pedestrian hits the call button. This alerts drivers who plan to turn that someone is approaching to cross the street.

The YPB was designed by Caltrans Senior Transportation Engineer Rob Stinger to prevent conflicts between pedestrians and motorists. Presently being tested in California, the YPB is being presented to the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC) in Sacramento this week. It was also featured during a presentation earlier this year to the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices in San Antonio, Texas.
