Caltrans takes steps to combat copper crooks

REDDING — Watch Caltrans’ latest News Flash video for a look at how Caltrans is fighting back against copper crooks. Since 2008, Caltrans has spent more than $7 million a year replacing damaged equipment after crooks made off with hundreds of feet of copper wire. Suspects are hitting everything from electronic highway message signs to underground conduit used to operate traffic lights. In response, Caltrans is using aluminum instead of copper and is working with local law enforcement to help prevent the theft of this very expensive metal.
