CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION APPROVES $325.8 MILLION FOR STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS
FRESNO – The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has allocated $325.8 million to 142 transportation projects that will alleviate traffic delays, repair aging roads and bridges and encourage bicycling and walking. Fifty one biking and pedestrian projects throughout the state will receive $27 million in allocations from the Active Transportation Program.
“Caltrans is building transportation improvements that will benefit the state for decades to come,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “Not only are we working to preserve our previous investments in the state highway system, but we are investing in projects that will expand the availability of alternative, more sustainable ways of getting from point A to point B.”
Active transportation projects funded include:
- An allocation of $1,000; City of Fresno, Fresno COG; restripe to create Class II Bike Lanes on Butler Avenue from Hazelwood Avenue to Peach Avenue. The City of Fresno wants to establish and maintain a continuous, safe and easily accessible bikeway system that will reduce vehicle use, improve air quality, improve quality of life, and provide public health benefits.
- An allocation of $100,000; TO2 Sidewalk Improvements; City of Arvin, Kern COG; bounded by Comanche Drive, Sycamore Road, Derby Street, and Varsity Avenue; construction of a safe route to school path using paved walkways, access ramps, and crosswalks along various streets connection to elementary school.
- An allocation of $110,000; Tulare County Safe Routes to School Plan, Tulare County; TCAG; prepare countywide SRTS plan. This project includes a survey of existing infrastructure along pedestrian, cyclist and transit corridors serving County schools. Included in the plan is community outreach, engineering studies and preparation of conceptual designs for up to 20 priority projects.
The newly allocated funding also includes $132 million from the State Highway Operation and Protection Program for 54 projects that will maintain and preserve the investment in the state highway system and its supporting infrastructure. These capital improvements consist of projects covering maintenance, safety improvements, pavement repair and rehabilitation and upgrades to bridges throughout the state.
“Caltrans is embracing a ‘fix it first’ strategy by focusing on preventative maintenance to our existing transportation infrastructure,” continued Director Dougherty. “We are striving to give California’s taxpayers the most bang for their buck because every $1 spent on preventative pavement maintenance translates into a savings of $6 to $14 that would have been spent on expensive pavement repairs.”
The allocations also include $8.4 million from Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by voters in 2006. To date, more than $18 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes. The remaining $158.4 million in allocations came from various state and federal transportation accounts.
Among the projects that received funding allocations today were:
- An allocation of $362,000; In Fresno at the McKinley Avenue northbound on-ramp; replace the existing metal beam guardrail with a new concrete barrier to improve safety.
- An allocation of $2,394,000; In Tehachapi, Kern County; at the Sand Canyon Road Undercrossing. Replace eastbound bridge and resurface ramps to restore bridge load capacity.
- An allocation of $3,312.000; in Fresno County on Routes 5, 41, 99, 168 and 180 at various locations. Repair approximately 100 acres of irrigation systems and 36 booster pumps to improve water conservation and drought tolerance.
- An allocation of $2,981,000; in Hanford; Kings County; at the Hanford-Armona Road undercrossing. Replace bridge deck to restore bridge load capacity.
- An allocation of $591,000; in Farmersville; Tulare County; at the County Road 164 Overcrossing. Repair steel girders that were damaged due to a high load vehicle hit.
