Caltrans' Interstate 5 Facelift Will Deliver Safer, Smoother Ride
LOS ANGELES – Caltrans today began repaving 28 miles (14 miles in each direction) of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) in north Los Angeles County to provide motorists a safer, smoother ride for their daily commute. The $26 million project is partially financed by $14 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).
"With the help of Recovery Act funds we are repairing highways more rapidly while also creating transportation jobs that strengthen California's economy," said Acting Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. "This project will provide motorists in Los Angeles County with a safer, smoother ride along the Golden State Freeway."
The project will repave I-5 between Lake Hughes Road and Vista Del Lago Road, which has an average daily traffic volume of more than 70,000 vehicles. Traffic data sensors will also be replaced and curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards will be constructed. The work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2012.
"From Metro's perspective, it is great to see the State investing at this level in our infrastructure in Los Angeles," said Metro Executive Director for Highway Programs Doug Failing. "For too many years we've seen the condition of our roads and bridges deteriorate. It is important for our economy that our roads serve well into the decades to come."
California has obligated nearly $2.6 billion in Recovery Act funding to nearly 1,000 highway, local street, and job training transportation projects statewide. For more information on the Recovery Act, please visit: http://www.dot.ca.gov/Recovery
