RECOVERY ACT DELIVERS $41 MILLION TO BUILD NEW BUS/CARPOOL LANES ON INTERSTATE 5
Los Angeles – Caltrans today announced it has awarded Security Paving of Sun Valley, California a contract to construct new bus/carpool lanes on the Golden State Freeway (I-5) between the Hollywood Freeway (SR-170) and the Buena Vista Street interchange in Burbank. The $129 million project is financed in part ($41 million) by President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).
"My Administration is working hand-in-hand with President Obama's team to ensure Recovery Act dollars are pumped into California quickly and responsibly. This project will help stimulate the state’s economy and, in this instance, invest in the future of California's transportation infrastructure," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The project will construct nearly nine miles (4.4 miles in each direction) of new bus/carpool lanes and repair the pavement on one of the most heavily traveled freeways in California. The section on I-5 between SR-170 and the Buena Vista Street interchange has an average daily traffic volume of 190,000 vehicles. Construction is scheduled to begin in September.
“We are moving full speed ahead during these tough economic times to get Recovery Act funding into the economy to put people to work,” said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim. “This is a very important project that will encourage people to carpool and use transit, which will help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the San Fernando Valley.”
Under Governor Schwarzenegger’s leadership, California has obligated nearly $2.5 billion in Recovery Act funding obligated to 931 highway, local street, and job training transportation projects statewide. For more information on the Recovery Act visit: http://recovery.ca.gov/
