Narrative

The Structure General Plans include bridge type, dimensions, aesthetics treatments, and a cost estimate. District review of the plans is needed before detailed structure design can proceed.

Conduct Structure Foundation Studies

Narrative

The district may have performed limited foundation studies before submitting Bridge Site Plans. These studies should have been provided to the Office of Structure Design for use in the preliminary foundation design. A complete study is required for the final foundation design.

• Request a Foundation Report from the Division of New Technology, Materials, and Research (DNTM&R).
• Conduct foundation studies in conjunction with the DNTM&R to determine the appropriate foundation design.

Prepare Structure Foundation Report

Narrative

After the foundation studies are completed, a Foundation Report should be prepared. This is an important element in structure design.

• Prepare the Foundation Report.

Prepare Structure Plans and Quantities

Narrative

Completion of the District review of the Structure General Plans initiates the development of the Bridge Plans and quantity calculations.

• Using the Structure General Plans and the Foundation Report, prepare plans to include bridge details, such as:

- Superstructure

- Substructure

- Type of structure (cast-in-place, prestressed girders, etc.)

- Railings

- End slope treatment, etc.

• Calculate quantities.

Review Structure Unchecked Detail Sheets

Narrative

During the development of the structure PS&E, appropriate unchecked detail sheets should be sent to the district for review.

• Transmit the Bridge Unchecked Detail Sheets to district units, requesting review.
• Reconcile district comments and send to the Office of Structure Design (OSD).
• Send preliminary Roadway Plans to OSD to ensure coordination between Bridge and Roadway Plans.

Obtain Local Entities Concurrence on Falsework Clearances

Narrative

Bridge construction may involve falsework on local streets and roads. Task D314 identified issues and established initial contact with the local entities. Local entity concurrence on falsework clearances should now be obtained.

Obtain Approval of Nonstandard Falsework Clearances

Narrative

Nonstandard vertical falsework clearances require approval of the OPPD Coordinator. Nonstandard horizontal falsework clearances require approval of the District Director with concurrence from the OPPD Coordinator.

Narrative

After the Structure General Plans, checked details, and final quantities have been prepared and reviewed, Structures PS&E is then completed.

• Schedule a meeting with Bridge Construction to ensure that the PS&E is accurate, practical, and constructable.
• Revise and finalize Structures PS&E.
• Notify District Project Development Unit that the Structures PS&E is completed.
