3.5 Master Files

a. Master Topographic File

 

The Master Topographic File contains all data representing existing topographic features of the project and saved views corresponding to the locations of individual plan sheets. Usually this file remains static after the existing roadway features have been located.

 

b. Master Design File

 

The Master Design File contains all proposed design data for a project and saved views corresponding to the locations of individual plan sheets. This file is referenced to individual sheet files. Other functional units may have their own Master Design files, but all the proposed design information should be put into one Master Design File at PS&E.

Only the physical design feature should be placed in this file. Anything used to describe the feature should be placed in the sheet file. The designer/design squad usually maintains this file.

Elements placed in this file must follow the standard leveling convention used for all graphics files used in the preparation of contract plans.

c. Master Sheet File

 

The Master Sheet File contains borders for each functional area involved in the preparation of contract plans. Using the Master Sheet File as a reference file eliminates the need for delineating repetitive data on each sheet, see Fig. 3.5.1.
