Inquiry #1: Bid Item 49 is clean and paint steel soldier piling. Division 1 on page 7 of the Special Provisions states the applicable section is 59. Section 59-9.01 of the 2010 Standard Specifications for Painting Steel Soldier Piles states "Where shown, prepare and paint steel soldier piles under the specifications for new structural steel in section 59-2." The plans do not contain or "show" any notes about painting of the soldier piles. Section 59-9.03 follows by stating, "Apply final or finish coats after installation and excavation are complete."

Section 59-2.03C(1) is the Standard Specification for painting new structural steel, but is general in nature and does not specifically state what coating system to use on a steel soldier pile.

Historically, Caltrans has specified a shop-applied coat of inorganic zinc with either (1) a sweep blast and final coat of inorganic zinc after pile installation, or (2) a pressure wash and 2 finish coats of latex after pile installation.

Please clarify what coating system is to be applied to the steel soldier piles.
