Special Provisions for hazardous waste and restricted materials

A Caltrans Standard Special Provision (SSP) is construction contract language used when specific issues may be encountered that are not covered by the Caltrans Standard Specifications. In the construction industry they are often referred to as project-specific specifications.  SSPs are needed when handling contaminants or meeting specialized hazardous waste regulatory requirements. 

An SSP may require editing before placing into a specific contract, however editing is only allowed in approved areas of the specification as indicated in the instructions in the hidden text. SSPs should be viewed with the "hidden text" function of your word processor turned to "on" to show editing instructions for each provision. To turn this function on in Microsoft Word, first open Word, then under the Tools tab click Options, under the Options View tab check "Hidden Text." Listed below are SSPs for the management of specific hazardous wastes and other restricted materials requiring special management.

ENLGISH UNIT SSPs

  • S5-740 ENGLISH (6/30/2006)(24KB)– ADL legal and regulatory notification to the contractor (use with 19-900 ENGLISH).
  • 19-900 ENGLISH (10/18/2007)(48KB)– ADL management specifications when hazardous waste concentrations exist (use with S5-740 ENGLISH).
  • 07-330 ENGLISH (10/31/2006)(27KB)– ADL minimal disturbance specifications for use when hazardous waste concentrations exist but material is not being excavated.
  • S5-750 ENGLISH(8/30/2007)(26KB)– NOA legal and regulatory notification to the contractor (use with 19-910).
  • 19-910 ENGLISH (11/2/2007)(45KB)– NOA management specifications (use with S5-750).
  • 15-025 ENGLISH (7/09/2007) (42KB) – Existing Paint Systems – Use for removal/sampling of lead-based paint or structures.
  • ENGLISH SSP INDEX ON THE OE SERVER – Complete list of the currently approved English unit SSPs available for use.

METRIC UNIT SSPs

(Caltrans has converted to English units.  Metric units are still being used for projects with exceptions to do so.  HQ OE will not maintain metric specifications after July 1, 2008.)
