Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Program Research and Evaluations
Caltrans was required to evaluate the effectiveness of the State-legislated SR2S Program pursuant to language included in the various Assembly and Senate Bills that were enacted since 1999 and included in Streets and Highways Code Section 2333.5.
The first evaluation was conducted by research staff at the University of California, Irvine, under the direction of Marlon G. Boarnet. The report was submitted to the Legislature in December 2003.

The second program evaluation was conducted by research staff at the University of California, Berkeley, under the direction of David R. Ragland. The report was submitted to the Legislature in January 2007.
