Inyo County Line - Lee Vining (MAP 11)
 
Description:  US Highway 395, from the Inyo/Mono county line is a 4-lane divided expressway with various shoulders widths that continue beyond SR-158 as a 2-lane highway.  US Hwy. 395 at  SR-158 north junction converts into a 4-lane hwy. to Mono Lake.  At the Inyo/Mono county line an 8 mile stretch of highway rises from 4,000 to 7,000 ft. at a 6% grade. Beyond this point elevations dip and rise between 6,500 ft. to over 8,000 ft.  Shoulders with rumble strips in most locations vary from 2 to10 ft.  Traffic is average. Scenic landscapes feature high plateaus, wooded pine forests, chaparral and riparian meadows cradled by tall mountains. 
State Route 203 is a relatively short destination route principally serving the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, the Town of Mammoth Lakes and many tourist destinations. The route consists of 2 and 4 lane sections. Traffic is a seasonal mix and can be heavy at times.  The route rises from 7,000 ft. to over 10,000 ft. with steep and moderate grades. SR-203 traverses pine forest throughout most of its length. 
State Route 158 known as the June Lake Loop heads southwest at its US Hwy. 395 southern terminus and loops back to US Hwy. 395 at its northern terminus.  It is a 16 mile 2-lane conventional facility with narrow shoulders. Grades are moderate but the overall elevation is relatively high. Traffic is light. Considered one of the more spectacular rides in the county SR-158 meanders past lakes and creeks and is nestled next to rugged Carson Mountain.
