Q1) Concerning Remove Pavement Marking- is Caltrans requiring the contractor to treat all the removal as if it contains lead? If not then why are we removing all the markings when the roadway is being cold planed?

A1) The cold planing of asphalt concrete other than transition areas is only being done on selected stations in locations 1 and 2 in the number 2 lane. In these areas the pavement marking may be ground and disposed of with the cold planing. The majority of the pavement markings to be removed are not located in areas where cold planing is specified. These pavement markings shall be treated as if they contain lead chromate in average concentrations less than 5 mg/L Soluble Lead or 1000 mg/kg Total Lead in accordance with 10-1.17 REMOVE TRAFFIC STRIPE AND PAVEMENT MARKINGS.

Q2) Special_Provisions_Specific: Comment-LAS has not been used in this area for over 10 years. Lime marination is the usual anti strip method used. Is the wrong standard spec included in the job specs?

A2) Special Provision 10-1.23 LIQUID ANTISTRIP TREATMENT is the correct specification. The asphalt binder shall be treated with liquid antistrip (LAS) to bond the asphalt binder to aggregate in hot mix asphalt (HMA).

Q3) Division of Construction CPD 05-10, Attachment 1 (Division of Design Guidelines, Selection of Asphalt Binder Grade), Table 2.0-Asphalt Binder Grade, dated 11/10/05 indicates use of PG64-28 for Typical, Dense Graded, Conventional Asphalt in the High Mountain/High Desert Climatic Region. The same Table 2.0 indicates PG58-22 for Open Graded Rubberized Asphalt in the same Climatic Region. Is PG64-28 the appropriate binder for the Item?

A3) Per Addendum No. 1, The asphalt rubber binder must be PG 64-16.
