Q1) Which epoxy coated bar reinforcing for continuous paving is required ASTM 934 or ASTM 775?

A1) Per the Amendments to the Standard Specifications, page 161 of 283, Section 40-2.02, of the contract documents, either may be used. 26Oct10.


Q2) Typically Bar Reinforcing is eligible for Partial Payment with Caltrans. Does Caltrans intend to consider Reinforcing for Partial Payment?

A2) Materials eligible for partial payment are listed in the special provisions. "Bar Reinforcing" for this project is not eligible for partial payment. 26Oct10.


Q3) On drawing C-2 and SC-1 the No. 2 concrete lane replacement at the on and off ramps are called out as RSC installed during Stage 1 per the plans. Lane closure charts No. 1 and No. 2 limit the work for Stage 1 to 12 hours at a time. Removing and replacing the structural section with AS, HMA and RSC in a 12 hour window is not practical, if not impossible, and at a very high cost. These same ramps are shown to have a complete around the clock closure in lane closure chart No. 5, and detours for those ramp closures are shown in the plans.With full ramp closures, these areas could be placed with CRCP instead of RSC, with the work done more efficiently, safely and with a higher quality product. Please confirm that the end of ramp areas can be replaced with CRCP in Stages 2-4 per the traffic handing plans.

A3) Stage one of this project includes panel replacements in the No. 1 lane with work that is to be conducted within the limitations described in Lane Closure Charts 1 and 2 on page 89 of the contract Special Provisions. Additionally, Stage one includes (7) separate entrance / exit ramp construction with No. 2 lane construction as shown on Sheet C-2 of the Plans. This work shall be constructed with RSC as shown on this detail for these (7) ramp locations. This work is subject to Lane Closure Charts 1, 2 and 5. It is intended for the contractor to not remove any more panels than can reconstructed within the time granted by the applicable Lane Closure Charts. 25Oct10.
