Q) Stage Construction and Traffic Handling Plans SC-1 to SC-67 designate certain area to be constructed in each Stage of construction. However, there is no written description of what work is to be constructed in each individual stage. Is there a written description of the specific work that must be completed in each Stage?

A) That is correct. There is no written description.

Q) Can jacking of RCP be utilized at the Contractor's option for the Route 1 xings? Xings are as deep as +6 meters and will be very difficult to safely complete, even one lane xing, in a single work window. It would also help if the invert grade could be raised up from the un necessary depth and drop into the connection structure.

A) Bid in accordance with contract plans and specifications.

Q) Please provide structure section restoration details(AB/AC thickness) for varied locations. i.e. city streets, ramps and Route 01.

A) The structural section is shown on on the typical cross sections.

Q) We are assuming that the AB & AC quantities necessary for restoration will be paid for in Items 84 & 86, Class 2 Agg Base & Asphalt Concrete respectively.

A) The Aggregate Base and Asphalt Concrete quantitiies necessary for restoration will be paid under contract items 84 and 86.

Q) Layout Drawing L-7 (Sheet Number 32) shows existing highway 1 to be milled anc overlaid from Station "E1" 124+92.24 Lt to "E1" 127+00 Lt. Typical Sections (Typical Section Sheet X-13, Sheet Number 14) shows the same area as being a new pavement section of 25mm OGAC on 185mm AC on 670mm CL2 AB. Which is correct, the Layout Drawing or the Typical Section?

A) Both drawings are correct. Between station 124+01.910 to station 124+45.689, 7.2 m of travel way (#1 and #2 lane) will have a 25 mm OGAC on 185 mm AC on 670 mm CL2 AB new structural section. Between station 124+45.689 to station 124+92.240, 7.2 m of travel way (#1 and #2 lane) will have 185 mm AC on 670 mm CL2 AB new structural section (25 mm OGAC eliminated). Between station 124+92.240 to station 127+00.000, 3.6 m of travel way (#2 lane) will have a 185 mm AC on 670 mm CL2 AB new structural section (25 mm OGAC eliminated) and 3.6 m of travel way (#1 lane) will be mill and overlay with 120 mm AC (25mm OGAC eliminated) as shown on layout L-7.

Q) What is the aphalt thickness for the cold planing on the existing bridges (see bid item #42).

A) The 45 mm cold plane (Bid Item 42) is for morrissey NB off-ramp (see construction detail C-14). The cold plane on the bridges is covered by Bid Item 37. Bid Item 43 is for all other cold plane on the mainline.

Q) Is the sewer pipe that is on Branciforte Bridge included within this spec. If so, how does the contractor bypass this system without a temporary utility bridge when the bridge is out of commision for 180 days. If a temp bridge is required to do this , how will it be paid? or, how long can the sewer line be taken out of service?

A) Please reference Section 10-5.01, "Sewer Pipe" of the Special Provisions paragraph 13 which requires the Contractor to provide a satisfactory plan of temporary bypass facilities at his expense.

Q) Per page 297 under "Coordination with City of Santa Cruz" the waterline will also be out of service for "construction of that half of the bridge", yet the bridge is built in one stage, and will take the 6 months to build. Will the water be rerouted for the duration?

A) Yes.

Q) Along the Earth Retaining Structure, many locations will require substantive excavations (i.e. 8' or greater) at the face of the wall. There are no definitive clearing limits along the wall. Will the contractor be allowed to clear as necessary to "open cut" to the right of the face of the wall, or will clearing be limited such that shoring is required at the face of wall as well as the back?

A) Per Section 10-1.28, "Clearing and Grubbing," of the Special Provisions paragraph 4 clearing and grubbing shall be limited to 1.5 m.

Q) On plan sheet 331 of 757, Note No. 1 states "All soundwalls shall be constructed with the 'mixed block' pattern as shown, except 'accent wall'. I do not see any walls designated as an 'accent wall'. Which wall or walls are designated as 'accent wall'.

A) Soundwall J and Soundwall L are designated as 'accent wall'.

Q) Please refer to drawing page 325 of 757 for sound wall F. The elevations given for the pile cap do not correspond with the typical section given on this page. For example, the elevations for the pile cap between stations 114+00 and 115+00 indicate a pile cap thickness of 0.939 meter while the typical section for these stations indicate a pile cap thickness of 0.533, which is correct? This occurs throughout all of the sound walls. Please clarify.

A) All cap thickness is 0.533 m.

Q) On page 203 the LTDS for the HDPE is to be on the plans. Could you please let me know what page I can find the LTDS. I have looked and could not find it. Thanks.

A) Please refer to Addendum No. 1, dated January 5, 2006.

Q) What is the depth of the existing asphalt on the three bridge? Will item No. 37 be used to pay for asphalt removal in the road sections outside the bridges?

A) Please reference Addendum No. 1 for the depth of the existing asphalt on the three bridges. No, contract item number 37 will not be used for asphalt concrete removal on the roadway, it will be paid under contract item number 54 roadway excavation.

Q) In a prior question we inquired aobut the milling and overlay portion of the E-1 Line from station 124+92.24 to station 127+00. I have read the posted response, but must reiterate the original question.

While Sheet L-7 shows the overlay described in the answer, BOTH project cross sections and typical sections show the "mill and overlay" area as being new full structure sections. Are BOTH cross sections and typical sections in error, with the layout drawing being accurate, or is the layout drawing in error, with the typical sections and cross sections being accurate?

A) There are no errors all the information must be looked at together.

Q) MSE typical section detail shows the grading in front of the wall to be 1.15 m horizontally & height of 600 mm min. or 0.1 H. The excavation height in front of the MSE wall could be more than 4 m in some stations thus will create a clearing zone beyond the 1.5 m horizontally. Also this will be in conflict with the MSE wall detail of sheet 746 of 757. Is Caltrans intention that the excavation shoring will be required in front of the MSE wall as well as the back side?

A) There is no conflict. The 1.5 meters applies only when there is no grading adjacent to a bridge or structure as shown on the plans.

Q) The project calls for settlement periods for retaining walls. The standard plans A62B has a detail for retaining wall settlements in OG. There is no detail for walls in fill, could you provide a detail for retaining wall settlements in Fill.

A) Please reference section 19-6.025, "Settlement Period," of the Standard Specifications.

Q) Which Basalite product would meet specifications for the "federal color 595b standards" for the (2-side split face) 8X10X16 cap?

A) On the website only d113 meets specifications.

Q) With reference to Item No. 83, "250 mm Irrigation Crossing," the quantity summary page for this item indicates that there is 142 meters, but bid item #83 is for only 13 meters.

A) The 142 meters on the summary page is paid under contract item number 156.

Q) It appears that there will be a need for temporary pavement in the median from approximately stations 108+06 - 116+60. This need is reinforced by stage drawings SC - 37 thru SC - 39, indicating excavation to final grade. Is it the intent of the drawings that the median be temporarily paved? Temporary pavement is not indicated on drawings for stage 1.

A) The median will be paved with pavement from stations 108+06-116+60 but is not shown as temporary pavement since it is permanent pavement.

Q) Sheet 313 reflects a quantity of 54.4 m of CIDH at Sound Wall F. The "Typical Section" on Sheet 326 indicates that there are both 300 mm and 350 mm CIDH Piles within the limits of Sta. 115+90 to 118+01, however the Elevation on Sheet 326 does not provide specifc limits for each pile type. What the Station limits for the 300 mm pile? What are the limits for the 350 mm pile?

A) The station limits for the 300 mm pile are from sta 117+22 to sta 118+01.738. The station limits for the 350 mm pile are from sta 111+99.437 to sta 113+35 and from sta 115+78 to sta 117+72.

A) The station limits for the 350 mm pile are from station 115+78 to sta 117+72 and the station limits of the 400 mm pile are from station 113+35 to 115+78.

A) For all Pile Cap sound wall cases including SW-F as specified in your concern. The sound wall plan sheets do show SW height (H) at the second line from the top, and Pile Depth at the bottom. As far as Pile Diameter please refer to sheet 757, sound wall - 24 detail sheet # 3 for Pile Data tables.

Hint: Check ground level if it is flat on both side or only one side on the cross section that is provided on any pile cap sound wall plan sheet and select accordingly Table G-1 or Table G-2 for pile Diameter.

Q) No Architectural Treatments for the MSE wall are given on the plan set. Is the Finish to follow the CIP walls "Dry Stack Rock Pattern"? Are the patterns to be matching?

A) The MSE wall is to receive a Class 1 surface finish in conformance with the requirements specified in Section 10-1.30, "EARTH REATAINING STRUCTURES," under the subsection, "Concrete" on page 191 of the contract special provisions.

Q) Order of Work, paragraph 3 states that "Work on Branciforte Overcrossing shall be completed by the 180th working day after the closure of the Branciforte Avenue Overcrossing. Work at other locations shall not commence until completion of work on the Branciforte Avenue Overcrossing, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer". Work at Branciforte Undercrossing is shown in several stages of construction in the Stage Drawings, as being done both concurrently and subsequent to other work. Please interpret the second sentence of the third paragraph. Will the contractor be required to complete construction of Branciforte Undercrossing prior to doing any other work on the job?

A) Order of Work - page 135, third paragraph, should read as follows:

Work on Branciforte Ave Overcrossing shall be completed and open to traffic by 180th working days after closure.
Work on Market Street Undercrossing shall not commence until the completion of all work on Branciforte Ave Overcrossing , unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.

A) Bid in accordance with contract plans and specifications.

Q) Apparently no provison has been made to pay for the removal of Temporary Painted Traffic Stripe. Is this an oversight? Should I assume that no Temporary Stripe is to be removed?

A) Per Section 10-1.01,"Order of work," of the Special Provisions, the removal of temporary traffic stripe is required. All work associated with temporary painted traffic stripe including the removal of the temporary painted stripe is included in the painted traffic stripe contract price.

Q) You previously stated in your 1-23-06 posting that [Per Section 10-1.01, "Order of Work," of the Special Provision, the removal of temporary stripe is required. All work associated with the temporary traffic stripe including the removal of the temporary painted stripe is included in the painted traffic stripe contract price." -- I disagree with this response. Please refer to Page 174 Temporary Traffic Stripe (Paint) of the Special Provisions which states "Removal of painted temporary traffic stripe will not be required." Once again is removal of Temporary Traffic Stripe (Paint) required on this project and what provision is there for payment?

A) As per "Order of Work," in the Special Provisions it will be the Enginneer's decision what delineation is removed including any traffic stripe. Payment for this removal is included in the painted traffic stripe contract price.
